Research to Inform Your Painting & Other Trades Sales Process

Published March 25, 2025 · Survey fielded July 2024

Make the estimate easy to understand.

Homeowners surveyed by Houzz identified clear, detailed estimates and timely, accurate communication as challenges when choosing renovation professionals.

Painters can clarify surfaces, preparation, materials, coats and exclusions. Other trades should describe their own scope. This is practical advice, not a measured trade-specific outcome.

Who was studied: 2,866 U.S. Houzz users with planned, ongoing or recent kitchen or bathroom renovations.

Limitations: Vendor-published, broader remodeling research from Houzz's user community, not a painter-only survey or evidence covering every specialty trade. This source also appears on the Plumbing page. It does not prove that clearer estimates increase sales or measure GRIT.

Explain the next step and timing.

In the same survey, homeowners said clearer project timelines and better communication would have improved their renovation experience.

Tell the customer what happens after receiving the estimate and who can answer questions. Keep sales follow-up separate from your team's construction scheduling and delivery responsibilities.

Who was studied: The same 2,866 U.S. Houzz users surveyed about kitchen and bathroom renovation experiences.

Limitations: A second finding from the same study, not independent confirmation. Preferences and recollections do not show that any communication method guarantees a response or approval. GRIT is not presented as a construction project-management platform.

Three Practical Ways to Keep Opportunities Moving

  1. 01

    Capture enough information before estimating.

For painting work, identify the surfaces, condition, preparation, access and customer priorities before quoting. Other specialty contractors can adapt the same approach to their own work, from drywall, flooring and tile to concrete, masonry, gutters and fencing. Confirm whether a site visit is needed before your team approves the scope.

  2. 02

    Make estimates easy to understand.

Painters should explain preparation, materials, coats, included labor and exclusions. If you quote siding, insulation, excavation, grading, septic, well-drilling or another specialty service, describe the actual work and responsibilities that apply. Your qualified team should establish the technical scope and final price.

  3. 03

    Follow up without becoming pushy.

Confirm the customer received the estimate, reference their project and ask whether they have questions. Make the next approval step clear and agree on an appropriate time to reconnect. Honor customer preferences and stop when asked; no number of follow-ups guarantees a response.

How GRIT Supports the Sales Process

GRIT helps capture painting and specialty-trade inquiries, schedule site visits, prepare and send staff-approved estimates, and automate follow-up emails on outstanding bids. Keep the next sales action visible while your team remains responsible for technical work, pricing and delivery. GRIT is not presented here as construction project-management software.

Illustrative opportunity

A $5,400 exterior painting estimate with preparation to clarify.

The customer wants to confirm which surfaces and preparation steps are included before approving. Record the question, have your team clarify the scope and agree on a reasonable follow-up. This is an illustrative scenario, not a customer story, typical painting price or revenue forecast.

Painting & Other Trades Sales & Follow-Up Questions

What should a painting estimate make clear?

Identify the surfaces, preparation, proposed materials and coats, included labor, exclusions and next approval step. Your qualified team should confirm the property's requirements and final price.

Is this page useful for specialty contractors other than painters?

Yes. Contractors quoting drywall, flooring, concrete, masonry, gutters, fencing, excavation, grading, septic, wells, insulation, siding, tile and other project work can adapt the scope and follow-up checklist. The research is broader kitchen and bathroom remodeling research, not a survey of every listed trade.

How often should I follow up on a painting estimate?

There is no universally correct schedule. Agree on a reasonable next contact based on the project and customer timeline, offer to answer questions and stop if the customer asks. No message guarantees approval.

Does the checklist send an email or collect customer details?

No. It is a local planning aid with no customer-information form. Checking tasks, copying and resetting do not send messages or change an account. Refreshing clears selections.

Does the homeowner study prove painters will close more jobs with GRIT?

No. It describes reported renovation experiences and preferences among Houzz users. It does not test GRIT, isolate painting contractors or guarantee a sales result.
